A woman of Turkish ascent, following ancient anatolian healing rites,
dreams her way through fragments of memory, both personal and collective.
Guided by a mythological character, Kheiron the Centaur,
she travels freely between the ruins of an ancient Roman hospital
and the streets of a mountain village, high above the river Euphrates.
Time and space become dislocated, opening up passages between worlds.
An inner experience translated into a film poem, Kazarken explores memory
as a place of struggle against oblivion and the violence of hidden history.
Suivant d'antiques pratiques anatoliennes, une femme d'origine turque,
guidée par la figure mythologique du centaure Chiron,
retraverse des fragments de mémoire, personnelle ou collective.
Elle voyage ainsi librement entre les ruines d'un hôpital antique
et les rues d'un village perché dans la montagne au-dessus de l’Euphrate.
Le temps et l'espace se disloquent, ouvrant des passages entre différents mondes.
Traduction d’une expérience intérieure sous la forme d'un poème cinématographique,
Kazarken se construit comme une exploration de la mémoire,
terrain d’une lutte contre l’oubli et les violences de l’histoire cachée.

Director's words: “My Tai Chi Master says one shouldn’t look for beauty, but rather concentrate on structure (of body, movement, the universe, life).
Then only, beauty might emerge.
My partner and I struggled with the structure of this film for years, frequently pausing for reflection, shooting and adding new material that the passing time,
or new encounters, would suggest... until we found that the film had finally started to evolve in front of us according to its own rules.
Until its meaning (or meanings) got a chance to develop freely, like music sometimes does.”

"Véritable poème cinématographique aux confins du cinéma documentaire, le premier long métrage documentaire de Güldem Durmaz est une expérience immersive et sensorielle proche du rêve éveillé et de l’hypnose. Tourné pendant plus de dix ans sur différents supports, tissé de différentes matières, allant et venant entre différentes époques, ce premier essai est d’abord une plongée dans l’espace mental de la narratrice en quête d’elle-même. Mais cette quête ne peut aller sans remonter le cours du temps comme on remonte les fleuves. Alors le film chemine dans les différentes mémoires qui constituent chaque individu : histoire d’une famille, d’un pays, et à travers l’archéologie et les ruines d’Allianoi, lieu de guérison antique, histoire antique comme source et matrice de tous les récits fondateurs. Dans cette esthétique des éclats, des associations libres et des rimes visuelles, peu à peu, la notion même d’identité s’expérimente comme la totalité d’une multitude de fragments, enfin reconquise et assumée."
